Hendrick Goltzius was the supreme virtuoso of the burin — his engravings achieve effects that seem impossible in metal. Jan Saenredam translated Goltzius's designs into prints that circulated across Europe. Cornelis Drebbel, also from the Haarlem circle, was an alchemist, inventor, and engraver who built a working submarine and a perpetual motion clock.
Their prints — mythological, allegorical, technical — represent the visual culture of the Dutch Republic at its most ambitious.
