The Rhineland Mystics

Vernacular theology at its most radical.

17 booksGerman, Latin

Meister Eckhart preached in German instead of Latin — and was posthumously condemned. His students Tauler and Suso carried the tradition forward. In Flanders, Jan van Ruysbroeck wrote The Spiritual Espousals. In England, an anonymous author wrote The Cloud of Unknowing. This collection gathers the mystics of the 13th-14th century Rhineland and Low Countries.
